(no subject)

The French Senate has nearly unanimously voted to ban the burqa. One person voted against the proposed legislation.
They need the President's signature to make it law.
My disappointment has no words.

The thing is...what do they do once they've passed something like that? Arrest people on the streets?
Great idea. -.-

Fines of E195 for wearing it, and about E195,000 for making someone wear it.

Basically, people stay inside rather than leaving, seems to be the answer.

Someone on FB said something about having to learn to be a good citizen if caught, but they may have been joking...

No, not joking.
Also, people are disagreeing about the amount of the fine, so my figures before may be off. This is from CBC:

The bill calls for the equivalent of $198.75 Cdn in fines or citizenship classes for any woman caught covering her face, or both. It also carries stiff penalties for anyone such as husbands or brothers convicted of forcing the veil on a woman. The $39,750 fine and year in prison are doubled if the victim is a minor.

It was unclear, however, how authorities planned to enforce such a law.

"I will accept the fine with great pleasure," said Drider, vowing to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg if she gets caught.

this is yet another reason why politicians should be real people and not just the rich ones for their area.. and also why the public should be consulted on all issues they decide to vote on.

I've actually decided now to not go to France when i eventually escape to europe for a little bit in a few years..

I'm wondering, will they also include the non-burqa veils that people wear? like ones brides wear, or ones from bollywood type things.. its the same concept, to hde the face, so why not ban all veils if they're going to impose stupid laws

[identity profile] rain-and-snow.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
The law doesn't mention Islam nor burqua, it's 'full face coverings'. I don't know. What about motorbike helmets?

[identity profile] cozifeellikeit.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
what about any of the medical coverings in hospitals.. facial bandages, doctors masks.. or bee keepers, or even costumes with masks.. french comic book conventions will surely suck a lot from these bans

i think its quite disgusting that france doesnt want to be multicultural, they just want to be french

and will all this extend to tourists? it would suck to go on holidays somewhere and have to change everything about yourself..
though i can see other countries getting an advertising advantage for tourism, showing that they're not as crazy as france, but wth the same amount of culture and history

[identity profile] rain-and-snow.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, it extends to tourists.

Unfortunately a number of other countries have been considering similar legislation - and it being passed in France will likely set a precedent.
